For this month's Artist Spotlight we are featuring the time honored tradition of book binding. The written word has been a part of human history for thousands of years, and the craft of bookbinding evolved into an art form with the introduction of intricate byzantine coatings on their covers during the sixth century. Today, written material is quickly moving to a digital medium accessed on phones, tablets, and e-readers, but Hannibal Jordan is keeping book binding alive. Hannibal works at Black Birch Books in Wasilla, Alaska restoring, detailing, and binding books. We were able to witness the skill and precision required to disassemble and sew the pages of a book back together. It was a great experience to be able to witness a multifaceted artform that has been such an integral part of the history of our world. You can learn more about Hannibal and Black Birch Books on their Facebook page.
It’s almost Independence Day, and we thought we would get in the spirit by throwing some sparks with sculpture artist Bryce Ehmann.
Bryce is a former welding student and a recent graduate of the art program at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Bryce takes his skills as a welder and passion for sculpting to make some truly eye catching pieces. He uses wood and scrap metal to form sculptures ranging from a planetary metal fire pit made of gears to glow in the dark resin, metal, and wooden stands. It is truly amazing to see the skill Bryce has in his ability to take wood and steel and merge them into one cohesive piece. You can find a showcase of Bryce’s sculptures on his Instagram page @the_sculpture_kid. Go check out his work!
Its a gorgeous 75 degrees and blue-sky day to start off the first day of June, and it looks like Summer is finally here to stay in Alaska. What a great way to release this month’s Artist Spotlight.
This month we are featuring Palmer local Allison Estergard. Before she was an artist, Allison was a scientist with a bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Science and worked various fisheries biology jobs before switching to art full time. So, it is no surprise that her connection to nature and scientific methodology are directly linked to her painting style. Allison uses geometric shapes, and what she describes as a “paint by number” system to deliver abstract paintings with captivating depth and color that makes you feel like you are peering through the looking glass. Her work can be found on her website and her instagram @alestergard. We were undeniably blown away, and we think you will be too.
We have had an absolute blast working with all the artists we have featured so far on our Artist Spotlight series, and we look forward to what’s in store for us in the future.
Welcome to the Artist Spotlight for the month of May
This month we get to check out the awesome work of Brandon Ramos, also known as @that.eskimo.photographer. He has the job almost every guy dreams of. Brandon gets to shoot product photography for guns, gear, and outdoor equipment. He has worked with name brands such as: Redington Fly Gear, Matsu-Tactical, Bronc Box, and SOG Knives. The perks? He gets to test the products he photographs. Even with all the fun he has with those outdoor goodies, Brandon’s work doesn’t stop at product photography. His portfolio is full of landscapes and portraits that bring his edgy style and big personality into uniquely stunning images.
Just in case you didn’t already know, the team over here at Supreme North really like guns. So, to showcase this particular artist's work we went out to Coal Hills to watch Brandon shoot some photos of his fully custom AR-10 platform put together by Matsu-Tactical, here in good ol’ Wasilla, Alaska. Needless to say, we had a blast.
The Artist Spotlight is to show support for our local community of artists. We want to showcase the people that deserve recognition for the passion that they have for all types of artistic endeavors. When we first saw some of the work that Cherish Engebretsen had done, we knew we had our first feature.
We first met Cherish Engebretsen whipping up some stellar drinks at the local coffee shop. Her bright and bold personality helped her stand out in the crowd. The same can be said for her painting style. Cherish uses bold outlines and bright colors to paint captivating and surrealistic images that commanded an appearance in our first ever Artist Spotlight. Her unique style and love for her work is sure give anyone positive vibes. Be sure to go check out her instagram @_artflavors for a showcase of her work. You wont be disappointed.
